This vintage dress is a true treasure!
It has no labels so I’m unsure of the exact age and where it’s from.
I was told it’s from India, or perhaps another nearby country..
This dress has so many mysteries..
One of the reasons I was so drawn to it.
The fabric is a gorgeous oxblood burgundy floral calico..it has a wonderful weight and feel to it..
Contrasting mint green cotton piping accents along the edges and skirt tiers..
The bodice is wonderfully tailored and has the most darling double cap sleeves..
The shoulder yoke and bust are heavily embroidered with multicolor thread and a dark blue silk fabric..
This embroidery is so gorgeous!
It’s not an added panel, but has been embroidered directly onto the dress!
A huge star pattern with 4 little round mirror details and leaf motifs.
Fitted waist and waist ties for the perfect silhouette..
Full maxi length skirt trimmed with the fullest sweep.
Unlined…
Zips up the side which seems like an addition.
And for the final mystery, the repairs..
This dress has dozens and dozens of teeny embroidered repairs that have been done so magically..like little flowers dappling the shoulders, waist, hip, skirt, and hem..
The tiny embroideries are done in multi colored thread and beautifully accent the calico..
I only photographed a handful of my favorites..
I love the charm of these repairs..And I have often sat trying to recreate what the story is behind them..
The mystery.
